It's Snowing

Sorry I haven't been keeping up lately, but life is hectic. Anyway, as I write this it has just stopped snowing at my house. Welcome to winter. I vow to not let it stop me from my outdoor activities, just adjust them. Right now, I am grilling some steaks on the grill and boiling some redskin potatoes. I like the snow right now. I will probably hate this stuff later. The snow helps cover things that detract from my yard. It is cool how it covers and piles up on my lawn ornaments. I know though that sooner than later, I will be out shoveling and clearing my driveway. I live on a backroad and the county only comes around after the storms pass and all the main roads are cleared. Last year, it took two to three days to come around. Oh well, maybe that is a good thing as my life will slow down as I don't need to go out on the roads. It also gives my more time to look at the magazines from nurseries that will be coming soon

Extending Your Gardens Life

We all love our gardens. Whether our gardens
produce colorful blooms and fragrant flowers or
plenty of vegetables to keep our families fed through the
long cold winter ahead , there is much to be said about
keeping a garden growing and thriving. In fact, many of us look
for ways to extend the lives of our gardens to get
that little extra life from it
One thing to help to preserve the life of your garden is by planting
in raised beds, basically planting your garden in a
specifically designed box that rests above ground. These boxes
will heat up quicker and cool down slower, allowing a little extra
growing time. These are easier for smaller gardens, but can be burdensome for large plots.
Raised beds aren't for everyone. If they won't work in your situation, it is possible to begin the
plants in the warmth of the interior of your home. You would then replant them when they have matured a bit and the frost is over. This gives your garden a bit of a head start
though it will do little to extend the life of your garden once the
first frost hits.
Some people will invest in row covers to protect your plants and
extend their life slightly beyond the average growing season.. These
covers help keep the plants nice and toasty warm. However, it is important
that you watch the plants closely when covered to avoid overheating. Keeping plants covered when it is not necessary may actually harm the yields.
